Local Rodeo Contestants Qualify for College National Finals Rodeo

On April 13, at the final qualifying rodeo for the 2019 Intercollegiate Rodeo season, at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colo., USU Eastern qualified two student athletes and USU Logan qualified one student athlete for the College National Finals Rodeo be hosted in Casper, Wyo. on June 8-15.

Casey Thomas, a second-year welding student from Las Vegas, Nev., was crowned the region champion in the Team Roping Header event. Thomas and his partner Caleb Hendrix, who rodeos for Utah Valley University, beat out 60 other teams in the region to be crowned champions on the last night of the regular season. Thomas was also ranked number one in the nation as of April 15.

Morgan Jensen, a second-year nursing student from Price, ended her year in third place in the barrel racing competition. Jensen was ranked number seven in the nation as of April 15. Only the top three in each event from each of the 11 regions in the nation get the chance to compete at the CNFR. Jensen beat out 75 competitors from the 11 competing schools in our Rocky Mountain Region.

Zach Jensen, a USU Eastern graduate and second-year engineering student at USU Logan, from Price, ended the season third for the Rocky Mountain Region in the team roping heading event. He and his roping partner Zach Ekstrom from Idaho State University are currently sitting 12 in the nation and beat out 60 other teams to claim the honor. They will all be competing for the chance to bring home the national titles in Casper in June.
