Dinos, Panthers and Spartans gathered over the weekend at BYU to face off against other schools from around the state at the 2017 Utah UHSAA State Track and Field Championships.

The Carbon High Dinos fought strong with the boys’ team placing twentieth and the girls’ bringing home seventh and the only state title from the three schools.

Dino points came from the girls’ medley where Carbon came in fourth. Senior Sarah Ohlwiler managed another fourth in the 100 hurdles while teammate and fellow senior Sadie Crompton placed sixth in the 800, nearly breaking a school record in the process.

Ohlwiler was also named as the 3A long jump champion, finishing over 17 feet with junior Mikelle Monson placing fourth in the same contest.

Points for the boys’ team came from the duo of Derek Hillam and Kyle Quinton. Both Dinos placed in the long jump with Hillam, a sophomore, placing seventh while Quinton finished his high school career with an eighth.

The Lady Panthers represented for their school after being named as region champions earlier in the season. The girls’ team came in sixteenth at the state contest.

Senior Nyet Rasmussen placed seventh in the girls’ 100 meter hurdles while teammate Alexandrea Sherman rounded out Pinnacle points with her seventh-place finish in the 300 meter hurdles.

Emery blew past competition to score a fifth-place win for the boys’ team out of eighteen teams while the Lady Spartans finished thirteenth.

Erin Hurst opened scoring for the Black and Gold with a seventh-place finish in the 1600. The school’s girls’ medley also managed seventh.

Hurst came back in the 3200, taking sixth while freshman Tayden Nielson took sixth in the high jump finals. Sam Morgan continued the Spartan scoring with a sixth in the girls’ discus.

Chase Christiansen started the action for the boys’ team, placing sixth in the 1600. The sophomore would return in the 3200 to take seventh while teammate Ty Funk took eighth.

Freshman Braiden Ivie nearly upset Delta’s Dallin Draper for first in the 100 meters, coming in second by a slim margin. Teammate Logan Cox placed sixth in the same event. The senior returned in the 400 for fourth overall.

Funk placed eighth in the 800 meters after which Ivie came back for another second, this time in the 200 with Cox finishing fourth. The boys’ 4×400 team also managed sixth, adding more points to the school’s total.

Ty Mecham would place fourth in the shot put while Chase Jewkes placed fourth in the javelin contest.
