Mammoth Exhibit Opens at the Museum of the San Rafael

A large crowd gathered at the Museum of the San Rafael Friday evening for the opening of the new mammoth exhibit.

The mammoth was discovered over 25 years when Chris Nielson of Nielson Construction encountered bones while excavating for the Huntington Dam. The mammoth died in a bog at a record-high elevation for the species of 9,000 feet.

The bones were so perfectly preserved by the bog conditions that the bones were not fossilized, allowing extensive study to take place.

To view the mammoth exhibit, visit the Museum of the San Rafael in Castle Dale.
