Congressman Jim Matheson today released the following statement in response to a proposed agreement by Congress to extend the payroll tax cut and unemployment insurance benefits, and also ensure seniors’ access to their doctors by halting a steep decrease in Medicare reimbursements:

“This is what Utahns have been telling me is the right thing to do all along.  While we could have avoided the stress and anxiety of the past few days, reaching a bipartisan compromise is what I have always voted for and supported. More good news is that the provisions are paid for and do not add to the federal deficit.

When Congress resumes work on this issue next year and begins crafting a year-long extension of this economic policy, I’ll continue to be a voice for putting partisanship aside and promoting the well-being of Utah families first.”
