As school comes to an end, Mont Harmon Middle School (MHMS) hosted their annual Dutch Oven Competition. Students who were enrolled in the FACS ll class where able to show off their cooking skills as they whipped up Dutch oven recipes of their choice.

The event was started a little over eight years ago by Toni and Bill Thayn, who won the World Champion Dutch Oven Competition in 2019. This meant the students had the opportunity to learn from the best.

Bill spends an entire class period teaching the students about the history of Dutch ovens, cooking temperatures and the process of cooking with Dutch ovens. The students are then given the opportunity to put their new-found knowledge to the test.

Students can choose to compete in the main course or the dessert category. Competitors are then able to serve and sell their food to fellow classmates and teachers during lunch. Local police officers are given the official title of “Dutch Oven Competition Judges,” which they take very seriously.

A winner in the main course category and in the dessert category is chosen and awarded a small cash prize, and the pride of having the best Dutch oven food.

Some of the Carbon High Seniors also found themselves wandering over to the Dutch Oven Competition just to see where all the yummy smells were coming from following their senior walk.
