The newly renovated Buckeye Reservoir Recreation Area on the Manti-La Sal National Forest is set to officially open May 15.
While many of the sites were open to the public last year, the entire area will be open for camping, picnicking and fishing this year. Visitors may now reserve 30 single-family campsites sites or one group area. Reservations can be made at www.recreation.gov. The single-family sites cost $10 a night and the group site is $50 a night.
Eighteen less developed sites are available for free on a first-come, first-serve basis. The recreation area also contains a picnic area and boat ramp. Visitors are reminded that boats on the lake are restricted to five-horsepower engines and wakeless speeds.
“We are excited to get the new Buckeye Recreation Area officially opened to the public and think the new facility will provide an enhanced recreation experience for forest visitors.” said Brian Murdock, recreation manager for the Moab-Monticello District.
Campers will need to bring their own water with them as water is not provided at the campground. Murdock urges campers to keep a clean campsite as bears frequent the Buckeye area, and there is no garbage pickup. Several areas around the reservoir will be sprayed during the first part of May to reduce the potential for beetle infestation of trees. During the spraying, a portion of the campground may be closed for short periods of time.
