Free event happens June 10 and 11

Salt Lake City — You can learn how to shoot guns, catch fish in a fishing pond and ride all-terrain vehicles at Outdoor Adventure Days.

And it won’t cost you a dime. The event is free.

The event will be held June 10 and June 11 at the Lee Kay Public Shooting Range, 6000 W. 2100 S. in Salt Lake City. You can learn more about the event at www.outdooradventuredays.com.

Trish Engel, special events coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, says the DWR, the Mule Deer Foundation and Sportsman’s Warehouse have put the event together to give you a taste for what’s waiting for you in Utah’s outdoors. Here’s a sample of some of the things you can do at the event:

·         Catch channel catfish in a new fishing pond. When one of these catfish takes your bait, prepare for a fight: some of the catfish are 18 inches long.

Everything you need to fish will be provided. If you don’t have a fishing license, visit on June 11. June 11 is Free Fishing Day in Utah, so you won’t need a license to fish at the event that day.

·         Hop in a kayak, or jump on a paddle board, and try it out. A large kayak and paddle board pond will be constructed before the event.

·         Take an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) for a spin on the event’s riding course.

·         Shoot a variety of firearms, including pistols, rifles, muzzleloaders and shotguns. If you haven’t shot much, no problem; instructors will be available to teach you the basics.

·         Shoot a bow and arrow.

·         Watch trained hunting dogs in action. Demonstrations will be given every 20 minutes.

Horses from Hardware Ranch will be on hand to pull you from activity to activity in a covered wagon.

The event runs from noon – 7 p.m. on June 10, and 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. on June 11. More than 30 organizations have partnered with the DWR, the MDF and Sportsman’s Warehouse to put the free event together.

“Gov. Herbert has declared June Great Outdoors Month in Utah,” Engel says. “Outdoor Adventure Days is a perfect way to get a taste for what Utah’s outdoors has to offer.”
