Pirate’s Den Press Release
Floating lanterns lit up the sky over Green River on Nov. 6 when The Pirate’s Den Teen Center celebrated Lights On. Among the festivities, guests enjoyed a marshmallow roast, snacks, a bonfire and sending their own floating lanterns into the night sky. The lanterns could be seen for miles. Young children and adults alike watched as the lanterns soared above the city.
Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating after school programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. The effort has become a hallmark of the Afterschool movement.
The Afterschool Alliance organizes Lights On Afterschool to draw attention to the many ways after school programs support students by offering them opportunities to learn new things—such as community service, life skills, college preparedness, civic involvement—and discover new abilities and skills. The events send a powerful message that millions more kids need quality after school programs.
Programs and activities at the Pirate’s Den Teen Center are made possible by grants and funding from Utah State Department of Workforce Services Safe Passages grant, Union Pacific Rail Road Foundation, Communities That Care, Southeastern Utah Health Department Tobacco Prevention, City of Green River, Emery County Recreation, River Canyon Wireless, Emery County School District and Green River High School.
