Early Friday morning at Sally Mauro Elementary in Helper, fourth and fifth grade students met in the gym for the school’s annual spelling bee.

Eleven contestants spelled their way to the top of their respective classes to make it to the school-wide spelling bee, but only the top three will advance on to the district spelling bee.

After 13 stressful rounds, Andy Sandoval spelled his way to the top, grasping first place by spelling the champion word “signals.” Daxton Alley followed in second place and Jordan Olsen ended in third.

All three of Sally Mauro’s spellers will represent their school at the district spelling bee scheduled for next week.
