Senator Mike Lee came to Castle Dale on Tuesday to hear from locals in Castle Country and answer questions. Before he got into the Q&A portion of the meeting, Lee spoke about the importance of government and that in order for it to work, it can not get too big. He shared that the government “needs to be on a diet. We need to bring the people back into the decision making process, bring the power back to the people.”
A Price native had a concern over the large amount of wilderness land in the state and how the state is on a trajectory to increase that number in the future. Lee spoke about the Emery County Lands Bill and how he voted against it.
Senator Lee further went on to explain his response to President Trump’s National Emergency Act. He stated that he believes that President Trump acted within his power as President but is concerned about the ramifications in the future. He communicated that if another president were to relocate the same funds and declare another National Emergency, “on say global warming,” then the right side would not be happy either. In Senator Lee’s mind, it is better to amend this option now so it does not take on another beast in the future.
The last thing Senator Lee spoke about was the national debit. He said we are walking down a scary path that leads to many problems if we do began to do something about it. “If you jump off a 10 story building, its not the fall that kills you, it is the impact.”
He continued to say that we are close to the impact and need to take steps now to soften the blow. “Winston Churchill said, ‘You can always count on the Americans to do the right thing after they have tried everything else.'” He reiterated the importance of developing and implementing viable solutions now to begin lowering the national debt.
