The area’s junior high and middle school students have enjoyed the opportunity to compete in quiz bowl competitions fro several years, but until this year, high school students had not. So the first high school quiz bowl, held at Carbon High School on March 22 was a new adventure, and Grand High came out on top.

Sponsored by the Southeast Education Service Center, the quiz bowls test students from School Districts in Carbon, Emery, Grand and San Juan. The students are quizzed on many subjects including mathematics, science, language and current events.

Each round of the competition pits four students from a school against four of their peers from a competing school in being first to quickly buzz in and correctly answer 25 questions developed by an independent source. Questions are worth five, 10, 15 or 20 points depending on the difficulty of the question.

Tuesday’s tournament featured varsity teams Carbon, Emery and Grand, and junior varsity teams from all four high schools. The Grand High students, Sophomore Mary Rice, Junior Udit Bhavsar, Junior Matz Indergard and Junior Spencer Smith made it through the double-elimination tournament, finally beating the Carbon team in the final round.

The next high school quiz bowl will be hosted by Grand High on April 5 at 10 a.m. Dates for junior high quiz bowls include March 29, April 6 and April 27. Each junior high tournament will begin at 9 a.m.
