Emery Baseball and Softball won their respective region openers on Friday and both teams did it by just one run apiece.
The Spartans scored three runs in the second inning and gave starting pitcher Geren Payne all the run support he needed in Emery’s 3-2 win over the Region 15 foe Richfield. Payne picked up his first win on the season. Emery notched its fifth win on the season (5-3). The Spartans will travel to Moab tomorrow to take on Grand County High School (4-5) at 3:30 p.m.
The Lady Spartans scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh en route to their eighth win on the season with 6-5 victory over the Wildcats. Jeridi Price and Kaitlyn Thompson each homered in the win. Emery pitcher Whitney Roper picked up her fourth win in the circle. Shandee Jewkes and Auminee Bennett each belted doubles. The Lady Spartans (8-3) will also travel to Moab tomorrow to take on theВ Red Devils. Grand County lost to San Juan in the 2A Championship game a season ago and are 6-0 to begin the year.
