The Emery Spartans didn’t waste any time in their home and season opener Tuesday night against the Green River Pirates, jumping out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter en route to a huge 77-38 win.
Junior Koby Butler scored a game-high 18 points and teammate Beau Roundy, who missed most of last season with an illness, scored 15 to lead Emery over Green River for the second straight season opener between the two. The Spartans slipped by the Pirates last season 52-49. Both teams ended up playing for state championships in their respective divisions.
Green River scored their first points of the game at the 3:08 mark in the first on a Joe Serafin three-pointer. Emery led 19-9 after one quarter of play. The Spartans hit nine three-pointers in the game, two each by Bryce Dugmore, Cody Wilstead and Easton Gordon.
Emery (1-0, 0-0 Region 15) will next take on South Sevier at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield on Dec. 4, then Waterford Dec. 6 at the same venue.
