In their biggest game of the year thus far, the Emery Spartans hung 88 points on the fourth-ranked San Juan Broncos Wednesday night in Castle Dale. Four Spartans scored at least 13 points in the 88-65 win, keeping Emery’s Region 15 perfect at 4-0.
Zac Jorgensen nailed four threes in the game for a game-high 21 points. Right behind Jorgensen was Bowdie Jacobson and Koby Butler who each added 18. Easton Gordon chipped in 13 points.
After a back-and-forth opening six minutes, Emery went on an 11-4 run to close out the first quarter, including five points from Jacobson and four from Gordon, up 22-12.
The Spartans then used a 12-0 run over nearly the final four minutes of the half, helping themselves to the 39-22 halftime advantage.
Kolton Butler, plagued by three first half fouls, picked up his fourth within the first 30 seconds of the third quarter, forcing him to the bench. The lead ballooned the 22, 60-38, after back-to-back three pointers from Jorgensen with under two minutes to play in the period.
The Broncos made a run in the fourth to cut the Emery lead to 16, 65-49, before Koby Butler scored seven straight and Jorgensen hit his fourth and final three to push the lead back to 20 where it remained for the rest of the game.
Emery’s 88 points were the most a team has scored against San Juan this year, having given up just 51 points per game going into Wednesday night.
Emery (14-1, 4-0 Region 15, #1 in 2A) will host a competitive Grand team (9-4, 3-1 Region 15) on Friday night at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ETV Channel 10.
