Carbon School District Press Release
At the Dec. 9 Carbon School District Board meeting, the members of the board were in discussion concerning the early out days at the school district, and possible changes to it. Presently the schools are out early for students on Mondays. Teachers use that rest of the day for planning and for meetings concerning Professional Learning Community activities.
For a students point of view on the subject, the board turned to Dalton Latimer and asked him what he thought. He said that he had done some study on the subject first hand and through social media and found that 75 percent of students actually preferred that the early out day be on Friday.
“I think people like to go out of town on weekends and that is a way for them to get an early start on that,” he said.
Latimer is this years Carbon School District Board’s student representative, and his input is meaningful to the board in all issues the board decides. While not a voting member, he can give the students point of view, which is something many school boards often lack.
Latimer was chosen by the board for his interest and abilities. A Sterling Scholar in the Social Sciences this year, he, along with other student board members from the past serve an important function on the board: On the ground eyes that see what is going on with students at Carbon High School.
Latimer is a senior this year. He is very involved with both in and out of school activities. He is the president of student senate, a student body officer in student government, involved in the school musicals and a member of the track and cross country teams.
He also says he “enjoys boating, running, sleeping, and eating cheesecake…” but probably not in that order.
Latimer holds up a long tradition in Carbon District of having students be a part of the decision making process in the county’s schools.
He will serve in the capacity until the end of June 2016. A new student member will be appointed about the time school starts for the 2016-17 school year.
