Students from Carbon, Emery, Grand and San Juan counties have been spelling words for nearly three months now in spelling bees, hoping to move forward to the regional spelling bee sponsored by the Southeast Educational Service Center.
The students began competing in January at their school spelling bees before moving on to the district spelling bees in February. The top three spellers from each district spelling bee moved on to the regional spelling bee. On Thursday, 15 students traveled to Green River High School to take the stage and spell their way to the top.
After 23 rounds, Garrett Bryner Mont Harmon Middle School was named the champion after spelling “danube” correct. Bryner will next travel to Washington D.C. on May 27 – June 1 of this year for the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Adriana Johnson from Albert R. Lyman Middle School in Blanding, Utah took second place, followed by Pierce Bryner in third place.
