Teacher of the Week: Kerstina Thayn

Kerstina Thayn is a teacher by day and a self-proclaimed baseball fanatic by night. Thayn is in her ninth year teaching as a third grade teacher at Castle Heights Elementary and went to school at Utah State University Eastern to earn a degree in education.

Thayn is someone who genuinely cares about her students and is glad that she can be part of their education. She looks forward to teaching every day because it allows her to interact with her students and build relationships with them. Thayn stated that she cannot choose a favorite subject that she teaches because she enjoys teaching them all.

Thayn’s passion to teach comes through when students who are struggling realize what they are learning and understand what she is teaching them. It is the excitement and body language from the students that makes it all worth it for her.

Thayn became a teacher because it gives her the opportunity to have a flexible schedule and also be part of her children’s life at the same time. Thayn has three children of her own in addition to the approximate 30 that she teaches on a daily basis. When Thayn is not teaching in her classroom, she is spending time with her family or at the Cal Ripken ball parks.

Thayn is a third generation teacher at Castle Heights. She was inspired to teach by her grandpa, who was a principal for many years as well as her father, who was a teacher. She was brought up by a teaching family and it felt natural to follow in their footsteps.
