The Carbon County Airport was lively on Saturday beginning in the morning and into the afternoon with an open house for the new USU Eastern aviation program. The event featured a small presentation for attendees from a few strong voices who have been supporting “the new era of aviation.”

An introduction was given, mentioning how it is not the beginning of aviation in Price but just a progression. Carbon County Commissioner Casey Hopes was then asked to speak a few words. He spoke very highly of the program and how excited he is to see it grow. Hopes also quoted Dr. Seuss, “Oh how high they’ll fly, oh how far they’ll go.” Elaborating on this, he told the crowd that the students who come to USU Eastern for this program are going to make a difference.

Representative Christine Watkins was then asked to speak. She first spoke about her admiration for Amelia Earhart and how she has always been fascinated with flying. She also agreed with Commissioner Hopes about the students who will come here.

“This is a great thing for young people,” Watkins said. She continued by expressing that she is willing to do all she can to continue to help the aviation program progress.

Senator David Hinkins was also asked to present words to the audience. People laughed and nodded with him when he spoke about the local farm boys having a sparked interest in airplanes. He talked about how a student learning mechanics might broaden their horizons with this program, learning the mechanics of planes instead of just tractors or trucks. Hinkins also mentioned how he really appreciates the opportunities that are open to people locally. He is very excited to see the expansion of aviation in such a small town and the local areas surrounding it.
