The Lady Dinos fell short on Wednesday as they traveled to Utah Valley University to participate in the state tournament. Carbon went into the tournament as the Region 12 number three seed. Their first opponent was Park City High School, who defeated Carbon in four sets earlier this season.
Park City came out strong and put up a tough first set for the Dinos, easily taking the set 25-13. In the second set, the Dinos put pressure on the Miners and battled back-and-fourth until the last point, Carbon dropping the set 25-23. In the third and final set of the match, Carbon was unable to match the Park City offense, dropping the set and losing the match 25-17.
Carbon’s defense was not enough to push past a tough Park City swing. The Dino defense posted 63 digs on the match with four players posting double digit digs. Standout libero Katee Martinez led the Dinos with 18 digs, followed by teammates Karina Ivory with 12, Taylor Oliver with 11 and Beth Child with 10. The Dino offense was paced by senior setter Lauren Rice, who contributed 16 assists for Carbon. Oliver led the Carbon offense with six kills followed by Child, who posted five kills on the night.
Carbon, falling into the loser’s bracket early, played their second match of the tournament later that afternoon against a tough Tooele squad. Carbon went down swinging in their second match after dropping the first two sets. The Dinos battled back, taking the third set and forcing a fourth. In an exciting fourth set had Carbon and Tooele trading points until the last serve. Tooele came out on top after two unforced Dino errors. Carbon barely fell short, losing the match 25-17, 25-13, 25-20 and 27-25.
Jordan Scoggins and Child led the offense for the Lady Dinos, finishing with 10 kills apiece. Senior hitters Taylor Oliver and Celeste Smith followed, posting six and four kills, respectively. Rice finished her senior campaign by posting 30 assists on the night.
The Dino defense was led by senior Martinez with 14 digs, followed by teammates Child and Ivory, who posted 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
The Lady Dinos, coached by third year head coach Danielle Jensen, ended their 2014 campaign 11-13.
