The Carbon Dinos jumped out to a quick start and needed a jumpstart in the second half to earn a hard-fought 62-54 victory over the Stansbury Stallions Wednesday night.
Cole Fossat had five points in the opening three minutes of the game as the Dinos shot out to a 9-0 lead. Gage Daugherty came in the latter minutes of the first quarter and nailed two threes, one with under five seconds to go to give Carbon a 17-10 lead at the end of the period.
It was all Carbon in the second quarter as the Dinos led by as many as 14 and took a hefty 30-16 lead into the break.
A huge third quarter by Stansbury, one in which it scored 20 points to Carbon’s eight, saw the Dino lead evaporate to just two, 38-36, at the end of the period.
With that slim lead, Mitch Olson began the fourth with seven straight points to help Carbon to a more comfortable lead. Fossat then connected on a eight-foot jumper in the lane to push the lead to nine, 47-38, with 5:56 remaining. The Dinos would lead by as many as 13 in the quarter to coast to the win.
Fossat led all scorers in the game with 18. Olson had 15 while Daugherty finished with 13 on the night, 11 of which came in the first half. Kyle Quinton chipped in eight.
Carbon (3-3, 0-0 Region 12) will host 4A Uintah on Friday night. The game can be viewed live on ETV Channel 6 at 7 p.m.
