The Carbon Lady Dinos played their worst half of basketball against Region 12 leader Richfield Tuesday night before rebounding in the second half for the 43-36 win. The win puts the Lady Dinos in sole possession of first place in the region standings.
Carbon struggled in the first half while trying to figure out Richfield’s press defense. The lone first half field goal for the Lady Dinos came off the hands of Taylor Passarella, who hit a three at the 4:02 mark of the first quarter. Kelsey Sorenson had the only other points in the first when she split a pair of free throws.
The second was much of the same for Carbon, which shot a combined 1-14 (7%) from the field and trailed 20-11 at the break.
Whatever head coach Ted Bianco said at halftime seemed to light a fire under the Lady Dinos in the second half. Carbon went on an 8-0 run to begin the half to get within one before the Wildcats responded. After a Richfield bucket, the Lady Dinos then used a 13-3 run to end the quarter up seven, 32-25. Chandelle Nichols scored eight of her team-leading 11 points in the third.
Carbon took its first 10-point lead after one of two free throws by Lindsey Blanc within the first 45 seconds of the fourth quarter. Blanc struggled from the foul line all night, making just four of her 13 attempts. She finished with eight points, which was her lowest offensive output of the season.
Richfield got within six, 41-35, after a 3-pointer at the 1:21 mark before Nichols sunk two free throws to seal the win.
Cyene Bigelow and McKenna Sorenson each poured in nine points in the game.
Carbon (15-3, 5-1 Region 12, #3 in 3A) has just two games remaining in the regular season. Canyon View (4-14, 0-5 Region 12) will come to Price Friday night for the final Carbon regular season home game of the year. The Lady Dinos beat the Falcons 54-37 back on Jan. 12.
