Trying to make it 11-straight wins and three to begin Region 12 play, the Carbon Lady Dinos ran right into the Richfield Wildcats Tuesday night and lost to their region foe, 46-42.
Morgan Hillam’s leaner in the lane and a Taylor Passarella three helped the Lady Dinos out to a 5-0 lead at the five-minute mark of the first quarter. Neither team found much of the basket in the first with Carbon taking a 7-5 lead at the end of the period.
Points were at a premium in the second as both teams continued to defend well. The Lady Dinos were still able to use a 7-1 run to take a 14-6 lead at the 3:30 mark after a Lindsey Blanc three and kept the eight-point lead at half, 17-9. The 17 points in the first half for Carbon was its second lowest output of the season.
Both teams woke up in the third, but it was Richfield who outscored Carbon in the period, 20-13. The Lady Wildcats hit a three at the third quarter buzzer to trail by just one going into the fourth quarter.
Richfield’s hot shooting continued in the fourth behind Emma Jones, who finished with a game-high 26 points, including four threes. The Lady Wildcats took their biggest lead of the game at the five-minute mark, 39-32, on a Jones three. The Lady Dinos responded with an 8-2 run after deploying a press defense to retake the lead, 40-39, with 2:45 remaining. Jones responded with another three for Richfield to take the lead right back. With the game at 42-40 and under 1:30 to play, Blanc went to the line to attempt to tie the game but missed the first free throw of a 1-1. Kelsey Sorensen did the same with 1:05 remaining. Jones made four free throws down the stretch for Richfield to steal the win.
Blanc led the Lady Dinos with 14 points. She also grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists. Sara Morley chipped in eight points and pulled down 11 boards. Sorensen and Hillam each poured in five. As a team the Lady Dinos shot just 26% from the field (12-47).
Carbon (15-2, 2-1 Region 12, #3 in 3A) had its 10-game winning streak snapped in the loss. The Lady Dinos will travel to Juab (7-6, 1-0 Region 12) on Thursday.
