Monument Valley edged out the traveling Green River Lady Pirates on Friday evening as the hosting team used a fourth quarter surge to take the Region 19 win, 57-48.
Green River got off to a slow start, managing only single digits to give Monument Valley the lead, 13-6, going into the second. Seven points in the second were not enough to gain the advantage as the Pirates trailed 24-13 at halftime.
The Lady Pirates ignited in the third, scoring their game high output with 26 points in the quarter. On defense, Green River allowed Monument Valley only six points, going into the fourth with a 39-30 advantage.
The tables turned in the fourth, however, as the Mustangs poured in 27 points, holding Green River to nine, to take the Region 19 win.
Talynn Lovato led the Lady Pirates with 20 points. Maribel Escalante poured in 12 for her team, including three buckets from downtown.
Green River (5-11, 3-4 Region 19) will look to rebound on Tuesday as the team hosts #1 Wayne (14-3, 8-0 Region 19). Wayne handed the Lady Pirates a 74-43 loss back on Jan. 4. Green River will then have only two regular season games remaining on its schedule with matchups against Whitehorse and Monticello.
