The Wellington City Police Department has reported that Wednesday morning’s accident has been issued as a total loss for local restaurant Los Jilbertos.
“Los Jilbertos restaurant is a total loss,” Wellington Police shared. “Thankfully, the owners and operators who were at the restaurant only suffered minor injuries.”
Authorities responded early Wednesday morning after a semi truck veered off Highway 6 and struck the restaurant on Wellington Main Street. The building collapsed as a result of the impact.
According to police, one woman was working inside the restaurant at the time of the incident. She was subsequently trapped inside the building, but emergency response teams were able to extract her safely.
“We would like to remind everyone to please drive carefully when the road conditions are bad as this accident is a prime example of what can happen,” Wellington Police shared. “Thankfully, today the injuries were minor.”
With the loss of the business, a GoFundMe account has been established to assist the business owners with associated costs. As of Wednesday afternoon, nearly $1,000 had already been donated.
“This restaurant was the sole income for this family and they will need our help during this tragic loss,” the fundraiser page shared. “Los Jilbertos was more than just a Mexican restaurant. This place created so many lasting friendships and a sense of community.”
